Filing Space?
Each cabinet has a certain number of inches you can use inside of it. Based on the dimensions you can only put a certain amount of letter or legal size documents inside. So there are filing inches for both legal and letter documents.
Do I need a vertical or lateral file cabinet?
Lateral cabinets provide much more storage, but obviously take up more space. If you have a lot to store, both legal and letter documents, then a lateral cabinet is best.
What if I file both legal and letter?
Choose a legal size cabinet if you are going to file both legal and letter, or a larger lateral cabinet. If you are going to file ONLY letter size, select "letter" and/or choose the 31" or 44" lateral. The 31" and 44" lateral cabinets provides the greatest amount of letter size storage.
How deep should my Vertical fireproof file be?
The most common and economical is the 31 deep cabinet as it provides the most space per dollar spent (unless you choose a lateral). The 25 inch deep provides all the features of the 31 inch deep but gives 6 inches less filing space per drawer. The 22" is a budget model with lower quality features, but it is outstanding for use in a home or small business.
How wide should my lateral cabinet be?
The 44" and 31" laterals provides 3 and 2 rows (respectively) of letter filing per drawer. If you are going to file mostly letter size, a 44" and 31" lateral is the best option for you. For legal filing, or mostly legal filing, choose a 38" or 44" lateral.
